The Tunnel of Oppression tackles tough issues.

The Tunnel of Oppression is an event that brings the community face-to-face with several of today’s toughest issues.

Participants will go on a 35-minute guided tour of the 3rd floor of Gengras Student Union. Each tour will be guided into several different rooms with skits to portray each issue.

The event is being run by Marsha Dawson and John Hernandez. According to John, some of the issues being covered are body image, sexual assault, domestic violence, hate crimes, LGBT issues, learning disabilities, eating disorders, and more.

While the Tunnel of Oppression is new to students and the community, it is not a new idea. RA’s have been going through the same tunnel idea for the past two years during their summer training. John says the reason to bring it to the community is because it gives students to ability to experience what their own roommates and friends could be going through on a regular basis.

Marsha believes that, “to do something together and become more self-aware will be beneficial to everyone in the long run.”

The Tunnel of Oppression is a University wide collaboration with 10 different on campus groups helping out. Groups sponsoring the event are:
• Office of Residential Life
• Connections Health Education and Wellness Center
• Residence Hall Association
• Village Community Council
• Center for Community Service
• Learning Plus
• Counseling and Psychological Services
• CASA
• Brothers and Sisters United
• NSBE

The event will take place on February 12th from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Students who want to sign up can go to Suisman Lounge anytime during the event, or you can email Marsha Dawson at mdawson@hartford.edu. The event is free to everyone, and is open to students, faculty, staff and the community. If you have any questions, you can call Residential Life at extension 7792.
